Analysis of the 2009 G1 Bluegrass at Keeneland

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Can John Gosden cross the pond to win this race with a second off the layoff horse Mafaaz?

We think he can. He has to step up one more time but his timeform was right there with the rest of the G1 $750,000 Bluegrass Stakes at Keeneland on Saturday.

Desormeaux opts for Hold Me Back and gives “the paint stripper”, Calvin Borel a shot on Theregoesjojo for Kenny McPeek. Desormeaux will have to take back and do the same thing he did last time. He chose the right horse…for this race.

Calvin will have to make one run to win this one. If he does he should hit the board in here.

Terrain is the tricky horse. We love Julien Leparoux at Keeneland. Stall is having a good meet and the horse parted the Nile in the G1 Breeder’s Futurity here last fall when he beat Pioneer of the Nile for second.

We like the way Musket Man won the Hawthorne Derby last weekend. Previously he had beaten Join in the Dance in the G3 Tampa Bay Derby who will be the early leader in here for trainer, Todd Pletcher. Pletcher won this race last year with Monba on the lead but don’t expect this horse to go all the way in here.

General Quarters looks good! He’s coming into this race off a very strong :58. 1 workout on the dirt at Churchill a week ago and Eibar Coa will be in the saddle for the first time. Expect Coa to be in a stalking position early as he follows John Velasquez. We should probably move him up one or two spots in here because if he runs the same race he ran in the G3 Sam F. Davis he could win this. He got a terrible ride in the Tampa Bay Derby and the switch to Eibar moves this one up big time. Watch the replay!

Massone will make one run with Garrett Gomez and should hit the board for the tail end of the superfecta.

Longshot: General Quarters

Watch the G3 Tampa Bay Derby. Watch the G3 and the G3 Sam F. Davis here to see why he looks real good to us.

Horse Racing Tip Of The Day – Friday, December 12, 2008

Friday, December 12th, 2008

If you followed our tip from Aqueduct yesterday you know that Christine’s Design finished third in that race — our bet was $20 to win and place so we’re down $40 for yesterday. Remember that part of the strategy of winning is to “stay in the game” and “don’t panic”.

Today’s tip is from Race 11 at the Fair Grounds

After a “white day” yesterday, the Fair Grounds is back on the main track and turf racing has been cancelled. If you’ve never been to the Fair Grounds I can tell you that it’s one of the best remaining dirt tracks in America and our “home” track. Traditionally, the Fair Grounds dirt surface plays very fair with inside speed being a strong angle and a winning trip to the wire. However, in this race there isn’t too much “quality” speed.

Let’s read between the lines:
