Zenyatta’s Revenge

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

If only I could have gotten my own picture that day at Santa Anita. It was a beautiful November afternoon. The sky was a marvelous blue and the crowd was enormous. So big was the crowd in the grandstand that day at Santa Anita that getting a picture of Zenyatta would have been the most difficult of tasks. Certainly more difficult than predicting her victory that day. I left my camera at home. Getting her picture that day she beat all the best males the world could run her way would have been great.  I could have added it to the pictures I took of Rachel Alexandra the day she opened her 2010 campaign.

You see, after the BC Classic I wrote as if Zenyatta had already won Horse of the Year honors. Surely she was going to be the chosen one. But it wasn’t to be. No, the ‘conventional’ racing gods felt that Rachel Alexandra was the one worthy to be called 2009 Horse of the Year. Afterall, she did beat the boys herself including ’50 to 1′ Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and the eventual Belmont winner Summer Bird.

I was at the Fair Grounds the day Rachel opened her 2010 campaign.  It was the New Orleans Ladies Stakes — a race that was written for her. And in a twisted tale of fate, Zardana, a horse sent by trainer John Shireff’s as if on a ‘scouting mission for the Queen,’ wore down the reigning Horse of the Year and gave Zenyatta her victory by proxy — as if to prove a point. Surely the outcome wasn’t what Jess Jackson and Steve Asmussen had in mind. But, it just may be the only satisfaction Zenyatta will ever get from the filly who might have been favored more because of where she raced then who she beat.

On Friday, Zenyatta will attempt to win her 16th straight race in the $500,000 Apple Blossom (G1). at Oaklawn on a conventional dirt surface where she had hoped to meet ‘this Horse of the Year’ in a race she’s already won.  I’m sure that the connections of Zenyatta knew that a very lucrative meeting with ‘the champ’ would be at risk when they sent Zardana down to New Orleans. It wasn’t about the money.

In my mind, I’ll always have a picture of Zenyatta. You see, it’s the one where she’s rolling home down the middle of the track wearing down Gio Ponti in the final yards of the 2009 Breeder’s Cup Classic to remain undefeated.  It’s the picture of her in the winners circle as the first filly or mare to win a race written to bring together the best horses from around the world in a test of stamina. And it’s the one I have of her being crowned Horse of the Year.  Oh, if only.

Oaklawn Park free past performances

Oaklawn Park Horse Racing and GamingGet free past performances for today’s race of the day. We “break it down” to help you understand the philosophy behind the selections. When choosing to wager on horse races you’ll know you’ve arrived when you successfully handicap a sequence of races that yields a hefty reward. The most important thing you can do is prepare for the races in advance.

Oaklawn Park
50K Dixie Belle Stakes
6 furlongs

#1 -Crossfirehurricane – these are all three year old fillies fresh from their two year old campaigns. She’s a homebred for Bret Calhoun who has taken over from Ronnie Werner. Broke her maiden at Saratoga on the grass and has the highest last race BSF.

#2 – Rapid Racer — This gal is the epitome of why American racing needs both types of racing surfaces. The truly great horse to win the Classic will be one that can run on conventional dirt tracks or the manufactured version that’s safe. Either way she’ll have to beat us.

#3 – Enticing Girl — It’s good to see Nakatani switch his tack to Oaklawn and work the traditional tracks this spring and summer hoping to find himself back on top of a contender for the Triple Crown. He has the mount for Tim Ice and she just missed in her last at La. Downs. Sitting on a bullet work from back in December and is the sleeper in here at a price.

#4 – Decelerator — She’s 8 to 5 for D. Wayne and gets last meets leading rider Terry Thompson back. She has a win at the distance and  expect her to be in the race from the start. She’s a beatable favorite who’s sitting on a best of 54 bullet workout ten days ago but Lukas has a dismal record in stakes and this type of move.

#5 – Vertical Vision — Was defeated by Decelerator two back in the Pocahontas but was steadied. Came back to be a beaten favorite against state breds at Remington. Has three wins and expect Mojica to gun her from the start.

#6 – Shotgun Gulch — Another with three winners including one at the distance. She’s probably better suited against Oklahoma breds at Remington.

#7 – Cosmo Girl — She’s another who’s sitting on bullet works and looks like she’s ready to rumble. She broke her maiden against boys at Lone Star last summer and will be gunning from the start.

Our selection: Crossfirehurricane

Oaklawn is a tricky track that plays speed from the rail when is just fast or stalking speed when it’s real fast. The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with rain later in the day. The three speedsters are 1, 5 and 7 and the favorite is the stalking speed. We’ll play the track to be fast and friendly.

Come back here for the results.

Today’s Horse Racing Best Bet From Oaklawn Park

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

With Chris Emigh riding 17% winners for Terry Gestes we’ll make WW Red Square our best bet of the day. Gestes is 20% when sending out horses who are second off a layoff of 45 to 180 days and this horse fits that angle perfectly. WW Red Square is the morning line favorite at 7/2 and looks great. She was dropped in for a tag last time and runs for the same $20,000 claiming price while stretching out an extra 1/16th of a mile and on the Oaklawn speed favoring track she should be stalking #1 Back In Artemus down the backside.

This filly finished a close third to next out winner Minardi Gold and should be able to handle this field.

Best Bet:
Oaklawn Park – Race 3
#10 WW Red Square

Old Fashioned Fit For Southwest Stakes

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

Old Fashioned is highly regarded as the early favorite for this years Kentucky Derby after winning all three of his 2 year old races. His most impressive performance was in last years Remsen Stakes on November 29 at Aqueduct in which he made an easy lead from an outside post and completely dominated the field by controlling the pace through each quarter mile.

He makes his seasonal debut in the $250,000 Southwest Stakes tomorrow at Oaklawn Park when he heads a field of 11 three year olds in the one mile race which has consistently produced highly regarded derby hopefuls including Smarty Jones, Lawyer Ron, and others.

Old Fashioned will be making his first start as a three year old in the Southwest and unlike other Derby hopefuls this will be his fourth race on a conventional dirt track. His sire is Unbridled’s Song who finished fifth in his Kentucky Derby try but his grandsire, Unbridled, won the 1990 Derby.

Since arriving in Hot Springs from the Fair Grounds, Old Fashioned has worked two bullets and trainer Larry Jones is looking for a big race from him. Ramon Dominguez has the return call as they face a solid group of three year olds including Silver City, winner of the Dixieland Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs over the Oaklawn track.

The Oaklawn track plays to horses that are close and who can get into contention early. Old Fashioned is that kind of horse. If you’re going to run a mile and you have positional speed then there is no better place to run. Silver City has exceptional speed and will also benefit over the surface. He’ll be the likely pacesetter and will test Old Fashioned throughout. Miguel Mena has the mount on Silver City and should set the fractions going longer in the Southwest.

It’s still early but after tomorrow we’ll know whether Old Fashioned can handle pace pressure as he continues on the road to the Triple Crown.
