I’m Lookin’ At Lucky

Garrett Gomez rides Lookin' At Lucky

On Saturday Bob Baffert sends out Lookin’ At Lucky for his final prep before the Kentucky Derby in the G1 Santa Anita Derby.

From a betting standpoint it’s a tough race to handicap even though Lookin’ At Lucky looks pretty good on paper at 4 to 5 odds. And that should make any ‘exotic attempt’ to cash a winning ticket that much easier, assuming Baffert is trying to win it.

Here’s why I won’t be putting my money down in the G1 Santa Anita Derby this Saturday. Baffert was quoted in the Daily Racing Form saying:

“I just want him to come out of the race healthy and alive,” and “It’s not a do-or-die race for me. If I can keep him fit and healthy, he can carry me the rest of the way.”

Well that’s nice to know for the other owners and trainers who are willing to try and take that statement to the bank this weekend. Even a second or third placed finish for a purse of $750,000 on Saturday might be enough in earnings to get into the Derby.

It’s understandable that Baffert wanted or needed to get one more ‘hard work’ into Lookin’ At Lucky before the Kentucky Derby. He has a right to run him and I’m sure they will be trying. But you have to be able to read between the lines of the Daily Racing Form. And sometimes those lines tell you to wonder that if Gomez gets stuck down on the inside or blocked in mid-stretch would he instinctively try to win it or instructively try to protect the horse at ALL cost.

Sit back and enjoy the race. If you like Lookin’ At Lucky this time you should love him in a few weeks at a bigger price. And at least you know they’ll be trying as hard as everyone else.

Horse Racing Tip No. 1 — Bet to win

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

There is no better bet then the win. Forget exactas, trifectas and superfectas they’re for dreamers and desperate gamblers who aren’t satisfied with the sometimes smaller but more consistent payoff of the win ticket.

Racetracks have realized long ago that the best way to get more money out of your pocket and into theirs is to create gimmicks that get you all strung out like a dope fiend and before you know it you’re in for most of your bankroll and playing catch up.

We have a history of winning wagers with many pricey payoffs not just chalk but longshot plays that make us money.

In keeping with the theme of “make better bets” we will begin to provide you with parlay plays where $20 to win can return a high percentage on a three horse win parlay.

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s picks.

Likely upset in Lane’s End

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Another weekend is upon us and there’s nothing like spending a Saturday at the track. This weekend features the G2 $500,000 Lane’s End for three year olds trying to stamp their ticket to the Kentucky Derby.

Last weekend the best of the this years crop of three year olds competed on conventional dirt tracks at Tampa Bay Downs, Fair Grounds and Oaklawn Park with Friesan Fire being the standout performer while winning the G2 $600,000 Louisiana Derby.

Tomorrow’s Lane’s End will be run on the ‘always fast’ Polytrack at Turfway Park.

Todd Pletcher sends in Bittel Road from the west coast where he finished fourth in his last race against Pioneer of the Nile in the Robert B. Lewis over Santa Anita’s Pro-Ride surface. In seven starts, Bittel Road is 3-1-0 while racing either on grass or synthetic surfaces. He’ll probably share favoritism with West Side Bernie and gets Garrett Gomez in the saddle.

West Side Bernie won his second start, the G3 Kentucky Cup Juvenile, last year over the Turfway Polytrack then ran respectably in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita. His sire is Bernstein who’s quickly becoming a leading sire of synthetic specialists. He gets his third rider in Edgar Prado and looks to be one of the ones.

Parade Clown has two wins and two seconds over the Turfway strip since adding blinkers. In his last race, the John Battaglia Memorial, he was the 3-5 favorite and was beaten by Proceed Bee. Trainer Katherine Ball sees fit to bring in Eibar Coa and we look for him to improve off his last race.

Proceed Bee, sired by Bernstein, added blinkers for his last and is two for two over synthetic surfaces winning his maiden race at Arlington last summer. He’s trained by Terry Gestes who is 33% in graded stakes races. He breaks from post twelve but has a victory on the grass at Churchill where he broke from the eleven post.

The Pick: Proceed Bee

Exacta Box: Proceed Bee, Parade Clown, West Side Bernie
