Analysis of the 2009 G1 Bluegrass at Keeneland

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Can John Gosden cross the pond to win this race with a second off the layoff horse Mafaaz?

We think he can. He has to step up one more time but his timeform was right there with the rest of the G1 $750,000 Bluegrass Stakes at Keeneland on Saturday.

Desormeaux opts for Hold Me Back and gives “the paint stripper”, Calvin Borel a shot on Theregoesjojo for Kenny McPeek. Desormeaux will have to take back and do the same thing he did last time. He chose the right horse…for this race.

Calvin will have to make one run to win this one. If he does he should hit the board in here.

Terrain is the tricky horse. We love Julien Leparoux at Keeneland. Stall is having a good meet and the horse parted the Nile in the G1 Breeder’s Futurity here last fall when he beat Pioneer of the Nile for second.

We like the way Musket Man won the Hawthorne Derby last weekend. Previously he had beaten Join in the Dance in the G3 Tampa Bay Derby who will be the early leader in here for trainer, Todd Pletcher. Pletcher won this race last year with Monba on the lead but don’t expect this horse to go all the way in here.

General Quarters looks good! He’s coming into this race off a very strong :58. 1 workout on the dirt at Churchill a week ago and Eibar Coa will be in the saddle for the first time. Expect Coa to be in a stalking position early as he follows John Velasquez. We should probably move him up one or two spots in here because if he runs the same race he ran in the G3 Sam F. Davis he could win this. He got a terrible ride in the Tampa Bay Derby and the switch to Eibar moves this one up big time. Watch the replay!

Massone will make one run with Garrett Gomez and should hit the board for the tail end of the superfecta.

Longshot: General Quarters

Watch the G3 Tampa Bay Derby. Watch the G3 and the G3 Sam F. Davis here to see why he looks real good to us.

Keeneland Opens With G3 Transylvania

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Los Angeles, CA. — There are two tracks that shine brightest each spring.

Tomorrow, Keeneland kicks off it’s short but sweet 15 day meet with the G3 Central Bank Transylvania Stakes. It’s a race for three year olds going 1 1/16 miles on the grass for $150,000 in prize money. The field of eight is led by 2-1 favorite, Stormalory and will have Julien Leparoux in the saddle for Bill Mott. Oil Man is 6-1 in the morning line and gets blinkers for the first time for John Sadler.

The best horses, trainers and jockeys are back to compete over Keeneland’s Polytrack and Julien Leparoux will be tough to beat in the jockey standings again this season.

With a month to go before the Kentucky Derby there are three key races for three year olds this weekend. The Santa Anita Derby will feature The Pamplemousse and Pioneer of the Nile. At Aqueduct, I Want Revenge is expected to cruise to victory and at Hawthorne, Musket Man, the winner of the Tampa Bay Derby, will face Giant Oak who was beaten by Friesan Fire at the Fair Grounds in his last two races.

Next weekend, Keeneland will feature the Grade 1, $750,000 Blue Grass Stakes for three year olds on the bubble for the Kentucky Derby. It’ll be interesting to see who goes in that race as most of the serious contenders already have enough graded earnings to run.

Tomorrow’s Pick:

Keeneland Race 9: Oil Man

He’s 6-1 and gets blinkers and Johnny V.
