If you follow the rule of majority then the odds are against Gozzip Girl winning the $500,000 G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Keeneland on Saturday as the heavy favorite. There’s a couple of reasons why she should get beat but if you witnessed her last race then you hope she wins anyway.
In the Garden City as the 1 to 4 favorite, Gozzip Girl was the “lucky” because she got into trouble from the first turn to the 1/8th pole over the soft inside turf course in September at Belmont and finished the race. Normally, when a horse gets into trouble it’s considered unlucky for horse and hero alike but if you asked Kent Desormeaux he probably considers himself lucky to have finished the race.
Tomorrow’s QEII is a rematch between the very unfortunate Gozzip Girl and Miss World, the winner of the Garden City. The race also includes Shared Account who was second in the Garden City after setting disturbingly slow fractions for the first half mile and gets Edgar Prado back in the irons. And two from the Pucker Up including the winner Hot Cha Cha come in from Arlington.
The QEII isn’t a “win and you’re in” Breeder’s Cup Challenge so the race came up light in entries but the quality is definitely there.
She looked pretty professional in defeat last time out and look for Gozzip Girl to make amends as the Breeder’s Cup looms.
After an injury in February, Square Eddie was sidelined from competing for his spot in the Kentucky Derby after a strong second to Midshipman in last year’s Breeder’s Cup Juvenile over Santa Anita’s Cushion track.
On Saturday he’ll race in the Lexington Stakes over the Keeneland Polytrack where he one the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity last fall.
The Lexington is the last stop on the road to the roses and was the course D.Wayne Lukas took with Charismatic in 1999 when he took the Lexington and then two weeks later won the Kentucky Derby.
But, it’s a different time in racing. The 1999 Lexington was run on conventional dirt. Square Eddie is proven on synthetic surfaces and will face off against a full field in the Lexington.
Square Eddie breezed six furlongs in 1:12.20 Saturday morning at Hollywood and should be fit and ready for the Lexington and will get a new rider in Edgar Prado.
The Lock at Lone Star didn’t hit the board.
The Roll Up in the Arkansas Derby didn’t hit the board. The other mentioned horse, Danger To Society, was even further back.
Note:
Not sure what to make of the Arkansas Derby but we think have we have the eventual winner of the Roses in May. Stay tuned. We’ll give it to you free!
The IRS Play was a hit. We had the .10 cent superfecta when we moved #6 Song of Soloman into the top slot with the scratch of #5 Always in My Heart who was our original Boxcar player in slot one of the IRS Play of the day.
BIGGER NEWS THEN THIS FOR TODAY WAS OUR LONGSHOT PLAY OF THE DAY!
We made a BIG SCORE in the Bluegrass. Did you see our analysis of the race?
STAY TUNED. We’ve got the derby winner!
