In typical New Orleans fashion opening day was “bombs away” as the second race winner, Monday Morning Rail beat the 1-2 shot racing on the lead every step of the way.
Under Chester Bonnet the winner broke on the lead and led them all the way around.
The Fair Grounds has traditionally been a speed favoring track early in the meeting.
Keep your eye on the speed and the rail this season.
Can’t Complain for Al Stall, Jr. and Curt Bourque look sharp for the newcomer. Shane Sellers is back after a long break from riding and wins the Pontalba with Right to Rule.
The first turf race of the meet was marred by a spill of “bugboy” Anna Roberts just as her mount, Kelly’s Premonition, was going up to the leader. It appeared that Diamante De Oro was just starting to bear out as Kelly’s Premonition approached and clipped heels causing Roberts to tumble to the turf.
Commadero was the winner of the two year old Stakes opener, the Old Hickory. Under James Graham he broke quickly in the short field and lead all the way while Shane Sellers couldn’t cause the winner to succumb to his pace pressure at throughout the stretch.
Jockey Anna Roberts can either quit or risk getting hurt. It appears she’s not quite ready to ride race horses as she was unseated coming out of the gate to close the days races. She entered the gate on the back of Ipoli but after the first step from the gate she was on the ground again.
Stay tuned to the Fair Grounds Report for more on bugboy, Anna Roberts
This appears to be a two horse race with either Informed Decision or Ventura being the logical victoress. Ventura is the reigning queen of this event but Jonathan Sheppard appears loaded for this years BC.
Not sure if Edgar Prado elected to ride Game Face but it seems that Frankie Dettori has but one thing to do with Sara Louise and that’s take back and make one run. If she does she could be right there in the end after her narrow defeat at the hands of the newly retired Indian Blessing.
We’ll use three in here:
Sara Louise, Informed Decision and Ventura

Forget the rest. There’s no mistaken real success at the track. If you’re the kind of guy or girl who likes to play the horses then you’re in luck.
We’ve got the Breeder’s Cup picks for you and guess what they’re still free. That’s right. Just like at the Daily Racing Form we’re giving away free picks to our fans. That’s because we want you to be successful at the track, too.
Over the years we’ve honed skills that are developed over time. They’re not just happen stance. If you’ve never won big at the track then take this to the bank — it’s not easy nor cheap.
Learning anything new takes time, patience, and, of course, money. That’s why we’re number one in handicapping the big races. There’s no better day to bet on horse racing then on Any Given Saturday, and the yearly Friday Breeders Cup card as lagniappe.
Let’s get started picking some longshots for the 2009 Breeders Cup races.
Race 1 — Breeder’s Cup Marathon
Interesting race. This newly added race goes 1 3/4 miles for the second time on the all weather surface and the morning line has Mastery at 9-5 with Frankie Dettori. Last years winner, Muhannak, is our pick to win it again.
Mastery is a 3 year old for Godolphin Racing who’s coming off a victory in a marathon race in Europe. He gets Lasix for the first time and has won over $1 million in just three lifetime victories.
Our picks:
1st – Muhannak – we love this kind of longshot
2nd — Cloudy’s Knight – don’t under estimate Sheppard
3rd — Mastery
4th — Man of Iron
