Santa Anita Free Past Performances

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Zenyatta blows by Gio Ponti in route to Horse of the Year honors.

Today’s race of the day break down takes us to Santa Anita. It’s a small group of allowance runners going a mile on the turf and many of them are making pretty big class drops. Get the free past performances here compliments of Daily Racing Form.

#1 — Yorktown — this 5 year old bred in France by Red Ransom from Wedding Night looks to be the right one for the race.  Rosario chooses to stay with him and gives up other contenders but Motion is 0 for 5 so far at the meet.

#2 — Monzante – this one gets back to basics for Mitchell. As one of the serious droppers his 2 to 1 price appears to be worthy based on his performance in the BC Turf when only trailing Conduit by four lengths across the finish line. After three G1 races at longer distances he’s dropping to where he can win and will be flying late.

#3 — Red Alert Day — third time Joe Talamo with a win over the track last month. He has the ability to show speed over longer distance after adding blinkers three races back and we think he’s the one.

#4 — Tres Borrachos — We used to like this guy and gave him many chances at the window over the years. Espinoza remains in the saddle but the more we think about it the more we don’t like Ecton Park offspring except maybe this one on a sloppy track. Not today anyway.

#5 — Sir Dave — he’s an Untuttable 5 year old NW4 who’s 0 for 2 over Santa Anita’s turf course. He’s dropping down from graded races but Rosario sticks with Yorktown. Carava is doing well but is 0 for 6 with Mike Smith in Arcadia.

#6 — Dakota Phone — not particularly fond of Zavata offspring on any surface but he did break his maiden over the Hollywood turf course with Bejarano in ’08. He made his drop into the allowance ranks in his last and gets Bejarano for this.

Our selection:

#3 Red Alert Day — we like this one in memory of Bobby Frankel but that’s not the only reason. He added blinkers and looks to be a different horse. Look for Joe Talamo to put him into the race early and the Santa Anita race last year at this level makes him the likely winner.

Zenyatta wins Breeders Cup Classic

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Summed up in a word Zenyatta was spectacular.

Her win in the Breeders’ Cup Classic was a sight to see.  And,  for horse racing  fans everywhere who made her the 5-2 favorite over a pretty decent group of males she scored the victory to secure her Horse of the Year honors.

On Saturday she raced herself into the record books as the first female to win the BC Classic and she will likely retire undefeated at 14-0. She beat Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, and the Belmont winner, Summer Bird, as well as several older and very accomplished runners like Einstein, Gio Ponti and the European runner Twice Over.

Of course, Horse of the Year honors will be determined by racing heads and sports writers who get an official ballot but our ballot is in and it’s for Zenyatta.

As much of a fan as we are of Rachel Alexandra the way Zenyatta won the BC Classic was exhilarating to witness. As they turned for home she moved up on the inside to about 7th place and the six males in front of her were all but done. Mike Smith waited just long enough to get outside and that’s when Zenyatta went to work and wore down Gio Ponti for the historic and final victory of her spectacular career.

Now we wait for her offspring.

Maram edges Heart Shaped in BC Fillies

Maram edges Heart Shaped in BC Fillies

Maram was the winner of last years BC Juvenile Turf for Fillies. This year she’ll face older horses going 1 1/4 miles and has the outside post. This is probably the toughest race on the card because defending champ Forever Together looks tough but faces horses who are better at this stage of their careers then those she faced last year at that stage of their careers.

This race is primed for an upset as Forever Together looked to be one paced in the end of the First Lady Stakes.

We love longshots and Maram will be ours in here.

This race for two year old fillies on the Pro-Ride surface is loaded with quality fillies and Bob Baffert has already said that his Always A Princess is doing real well for the race.  However, there’s one in here that’s already beat her and looks tough to us.

Our pick for this years BC Juvenile Fillies on the main track:
